Reinvent decentralizing storage with Filecoin and IPFS

and win up to $35,000* in prizes.

A decentralized web needs decentralized storage!

Decentralized data storage is driving a fundamental shift in the efficiency and economics of large-scale storage systems. By eliminating the centralized control, decentralized data storage allows users to store and share data without relying on third-party storage providers and also, allows us to mitigate the risk of data failures and outages while increasing security, performance, and privacy.

Enter Filecoin, an open, decentralized network that can potentially fix the

pitfalls of the current centralized cloud infrastructure.

Introduction to Polygon, the first well-structured, easy-to-use platform for Ethereum scaling and infrastructure development. Its core component is Polygon SDK, a modular, flexible framework that supports building and connecting Secured Chains like Optimistic Rollups, zkRollups, Validium, etc, and Standalone Chains like Polygon POS, designed for flexibility and independence. Polygon’s scaling solutions have seen widespread adoption with 500+ Dapps, ~567M+ txns, and ~6M+ daily txns.

About the Program

In order to facilitate decentralized web adoption, Filecoin along with Polygon have partnered to launch the Mars Hackathon focused on decentralizing storage!

We’d like to invite all #Builders and developers to disrupt the current data storage realm by creating inventive solutions utilizing the Filecoin and IPFS frameworks.

Track 1
Let the Decentralization begin!

Use Filecoin, IPFS or the following decentralized storage services: Estuary, Slate,, or to your advantage to solve everyday problems with decentralised storage solutions.

*Unlock the Huddle bonus of an additional $2000 by utilising  the Huddle SDK for building streaming applications with the help of Filecoin!
Build your own versions of Netflix, twitch and YouTube!

Track 2
Operation Activate Polygon

Build your dApp on Polygon and use Filecoin and/or IPFS for your storage requirements.

About Filecoin & IPFS

Filecoin, the world’s largest decentralized network, allows users to store, request, and transfer data via a verifiable marketplace. Filecoin is completely open-source, enabling people from all over the world to participate. The Filecoin protocol runs on an advanced and novel proof system -- a combination of Proof of Spacetime (PoSt) and Proof of Replication (PoRep), to provide unmatched efficiency and reliability.

Filecoin’s advanced technology provides a robust foundation to store the world’s most valuable data sets. An alternative to costly cloud storage, the Filecoin network offers efficiently priced and geographically decentralized storage, minimizing financial barriers, and allowing users to take advantage of its unmatched network capabilities.

IPFS is a peer-to-peer network and protocol designed to make the web faster, safer, and more open. IPFS upgrades the web to work peer to peer, addressing data by what it is instead of where it’s located on the network, or who is hosting it.

I'm new to Ethereum or Filecoin. Can I participate?

Absolutely! Our events are open to both beginners and veterans of the web3 world.ew question go to app settings and press "Manage Questions" button.

How many people can be on a team?

You can form teams of up to 5 people. There are no restrictions for team members, so you can team up with hackers of any country or experience level!

What is the Minimum viable submission submission required for the mars hackathon?

1. Project Description

  • The name and summary of the project
  • Names/pseudonyms of team members and contact info (e.g., GitHub handle, email address, or other)
  • How the project uses to IPFS and/or Filecoin and/or decentralized storage services that build on top of either with example links to where in code those technologies are used.
2. Link to the publicly visible source code repository
  • Provide comprehensive README, incl. a clear description of the work and mention of how our tech is used in the Technologies Used section of README.
  • Include a link to the working demo or provide a testing guide
3. Showcase
  • 2-3 minute video that presents the idea, including a brief demo that demonstrates the use of IPFS and/or Filecoin or anything that builds on top of them
  • If applicable, select the appropriate track when submitting the project.
  • Submitting the same projects across multiple hackathons will lead disqualification
  • Only projects or features (preferably in separate branch) built specifically for the respective hackathon will be considered for prizes
  • Broken links may disqualify the project from the judging process.
  • Using an IPFS HTTP gateway doesn’t count as building on top of IPFS. Exclusively basing your submission on that does not make you eligible for rewards

Can we apply for multiple products/projects?

Yes, the same team can apply for multiple products/projects as long as they fulfill the mandatory criterias, the submission stays valid. Please create a new submission to apply again.

Can an individual apply for the Mars Hackathon?

Yes, an individual or a group of individuals or a startup with founders/team can apply for the hackathon.

Who owns the IP to my project?

The IP remains solely with the maker.

Will Filecoin/IPFS fund my project after selection?

The open-source protocol IPFS and storage network Filecoin are deeply committed to nurturing hacker communities. Through our events and challenges, we encourage and empower developers and entrepreneurs to solve significant problems, ship innovative applications and shape the future of the web to be more decentralized, robust, and secure. We reward our participants' interest and contributions with attractive prizes. Beyond hackathons, together with our ecosystem partners and collaborators, we offer a broad range of follow-on opportunities (incl. access to grants, accelerators, seed funding and more) so ideas can grow into winning ventures.

What is the judging criteria for the mars hackathon?

Our judges grade submissions across five equally-weighted categories: 1) Design, 2) Novelty/Originality, 3) Technical Accomplishment, 4) Potential Impact, 5) Creativity/Fun

How will I receive the prize money if I win?

The prizes will be distributed in Filecoin (FIL) and/or Matic tokens.
